Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Dementia Specialist Program

This program is designed to equip CNAs with specialized skills and knowledge to provide compassionate and effective care for individuals with dementia. The curriculum includes:

  1. Understanding Dementia: Comprehensive overview of dementia types, symptoms, progression, and impact on patients and families.
  2. Communication Techniques: Strategies for effective communication with dementia patients, including non-verbal cues and therapeutic communication.
  3. Behavior Management: Techniques for managing challenging behaviors associated with dementia, such as aggression, wandering, and agitation.
  4. Person-Centered Care: Emphasis on individualized care plans that respect the dignity and preferences of dementia patients.
  5. Safety and Emergency Procedures: Protocols for ensuring the safety of dementia patients and responding to emergencies.
  6. Caregiver Support: Resources and strategies for supporting caregivers and families of dementia patients.

Upon completion, participants will receive certification as a CNA Dementia Specialist, demonstrating their expertise in providing specialized dementia care.

Additional Training and Certification Information

  • The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) offers dementia care education and certification for CNAs.
  • The Alzheimer's Association offers training and certification through essential Z.
  • Evergreen Certifications offers the Evergreen Certified Dementia Care Specialist (ECDCS) certification.
